What is Penile Prosthesis?

Penile prosthesis is called implants placed in order to solve the erection problem known as erectile dysfunction in the literature. Erectile dysfunction, which occurs in the male reproductive system due to age, genetics, diseases or lifestyle, adversely affects the sexual life of individuals. These urological prostheses, called penile prosthesis (penis prosthesis, happiness stick), are a surgical procedure and are generally applied to patients who have tried other treatment methods and failed.

What are the Penile Prosthesis Types?

Penile prosthesis types are basically divided into two; They are semi-rigid and inflatable prostheses. The most commonly used type of prosthesis today is the inflatable prosthesis.

There are 2 and 3 piece types of inflatable prostheses. Inflatable prostheses positioned inside the penis can easily be activated by recognizing a real erection. Since all parts are placed in the body with a surgical procedure, they are invisible and unnoticeable. It gives comfortable and satisfying results.

Semi-rigid (bendable) prostheses are simpler. Fewer parts are placed in the body and the process becomes easier. It has the ability to bend during intercourse. The reason why these prostheses are not preferred is that they are difficult to control and the risk of being visible under clothing.

Before Penile Prosthesis Procedure

Penile prosthesis procedure seems to be an ideal and satisfactory treatment method, especially since it is recommended for patients who do not respond to other treatments. Although post-processing results support this argument, there may be some exceptions. First of all, some bodies may not be able to remove these implants, which may cause various complications during or after surgery. In order to avoid such a situation, people undergo urological and physical examination. If there is no health problem, it is determined which type of prosthesis will be used and what kind of surgery plan will be created.

How is Penile Prosthesis Procedure Performed?

Penile prosthesis operations are relatively easy procedures that are not complicated. Prostheses specially prepared for the patient are placed in that area through an incision made from the abdomen or the tip of the penis. Before this procedure, urine is removed with surgical aparts, which we call catheters. If two-piece inflatable prostheses are to be used, a valve and a pump are placed in the scrotum, and if a three-piece prosthesis is used, a reservoir is placed on the abdominal wall in addition to the valve and pump. At the end of all procedures, the incisions are closed by suturing. This surgery takes an average of 1 hour.

After Penile Prosthesis Procedure

Penile prostheses are simple surgeries that take a very short time.

There may be mild pain after the surgery, but it is temporary.
Antibiotics prescribed by the doctor should be used to eliminate the risk of post-operative infection.
After the procedure, the patient should wear special underwear for at least 10 days.
You can take a bath 2-3 days after the operation.
At the end of two weeks, the stitches are removed.
At the end of 4 to 6 weeks, the patient can easily return to his daily life and sexual life.
A number of exercises are recommended in the immediate post-operative period.

Candidates Not Suitable for Penile Implant Procedure

Not every surgery can be done for everyone, and there are some problems that may prevent penile prosthesis. Patients with chronic diseases, especially lung, urinary tract infections and diabetes, are not suitable for this surgery.

In addition, penile prosthesis does not increase sexual desire and power. It does not lengthen the penis. It is also not suitable for people with such expectations.
